The Razr is gorgeous. Nothing else looks like it. The vertical flip is a considerably better, more usable form factor than the horizontal flip of the Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X. But the Razr simply doesn't work very well—certainly not as well as you'd hope for $1,500.

The Motorola Razr had a lot to live up to, but unfortunately, nostalgia can't save this mess of a foldable phone.

The Razr isn't just a retro revival; it's also Motorola's first, fascinating attempt at a foldable smartphone. We can't deny that flipping a phone open and closed in 2020 comes with a unique sense of satisfaction, but the compromises Motorola had to make here -- dim, low-res screen, mid-range chipset, purely average battery, lackluster cameras -- make the Razr nearly impossible to recommended. (That it's a Verizon exclusive isn't great either.) Ultimately, the Razr is an undeniably cool phone; it's just one that doesn't act or feel like it should cost $1,500.

I get it. Foldable phones will get dramatically cheaper soon (see: Galaxy Fold versus Galaxy Z Flip), and the Razr is just the start for Motorola. But maybe the company should have considered waiting until the technology matured a little bit more. It doesn't matter that I now have a smaller phone; the phone itself still needs to be good.

The reborn Motorola Razr offers a large display in a futuristic foldable design, but its myriad shortcomings mean it's not worth the $1,500 plunge. The new Motorola Razr is a big risk that doesn't pay off

The Motorola RAZR is one of the best looking smartphones on the market. It excites like no other phone. However, look beyond the surface and you'll realize the compromises include average battery life, a creaking display and a lower than average camera. Ultimately, the compromises are too many for far too much money.

I spent a week testing the Razr foldable phone and became enamored with it. But I also have worries over its long-term durability and high price tag.

I wanted to love the 2020 Motorola razr. Its design is exceptional, but ultimately, it feels like a compromised experience at $1,500. Unless you're absolutely enamored with the retro flip phone design, you're probably better off looking at the foldable Galaxy Z Flip, which has better hardware, at $1,380.

Feel free to give Motorola props for taking foldable display technology and putting it into an iconic design. Do that. That’s fine. They deserve to be acknowledged for working a little engineering magic. Just don’t buy this phone.

The hinge design is a feat of engineering and the phone feels amazing. We cannot stress enough that hanging up a phone call in a short, sharp flip is nothing short of wonderful and something the monolithic slabs of 2019 cannot offer. Staying true to...

The Motorola RAZR may not be the most striking foldable we've ever seen, but it serves up the most promising form factor for an average user, and after a short time with it, we have more confidence in its design than in that of the competition. How it...

Hands on: The Razr 2019 is a phone brimming with nostalgia and this is both a positive and a negative. Like the Galaxy Fold, the Razr 2019 feels like a first-gen product and will likely only be for a very select few. Due to way it folds you're not really getting anything over-and-above a regular 6.2-inch phone – aside from the fact it's very small in your pocket. Is this enough of a benefit to forego a truly high-end, multi-camera system and battery life that won't need babying? I am yet to be convinced. What I can say with confidence is that this is a gorgeous, fantastically well-built smartphone that feels a lot more complete than the Galaxy Fold. The way the display folds without leaving a huge crease on the display is a massive plus for me.

Hands on: The design and engineering at play are unquestionably impressive and this is the first foldable phone you'll actually be able to buy in the truest sense of the term. The main question is whether or not the exclusivity and desirability of this new entrant into the foldable market will make up for a high price tag and middling internals.
